George Lucas, what have you done?!
I have slowly but surely started to hate George Lucas. He is a money-hungry sell-out who has no regard for fans of his work. His latest movie, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was a total piece of crap. The story was horrible and helped destroy the entire Star Wars mythos that was so carefully crafted over the past twenty years.
I am somewhat a Star Wars freak. I don't collect everything Star Wars, but I do read a lot of the books and comic books so I do know a lot of the mythos. When I first heard about the new movies coming out I was overwhelmed with joy. Finally, we get to see what happened prior to the events in the three awesome Star Wars movies (New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). You can imagine my disappointment when I saw Phantom Menace for the first time. The complete marketing sell-out and the reliance on computer graphics destroyed the movie. Jar Jar Binks (I'm going to be nice and not write about Jar Jar) was not needed in the movie and Anakin was a one dimensional character with no feeling or character development. I don't understand how Jake Lloyd got the part. He sucked ass. The entire movie was incoherent and did nothing to excite me. Even the battle sequences with the Jedi were boring. The explanation of the Force was the most disappointing part of the movie. Finding out that the Force is actually a microscopic race of beings was gut wrenching. After watching the movie, I felt disgusted and could not understand how anyone could ruin such a great property like Star Wars in a span of two hours.
It seems that George Lucas had all these ideas in his head well before he decided to make the movies. Well, I think either he's lying or someone else made the original three movies. The originals had the "B Movie" feeling and the classic good versus evil plot. In these new movies, there's too much emphasis on computer graphics and bad acting. Just listen to the trailers for the sheer amount of one-liners each character gets. Lucas doesn't seem to understand that you cannot manufacture cult material. Cult material is created from the fans that love the movie. I feel he's betrayed me with his marketing gimmicks and his seemingly loyalty to the almighty dollar.
Many people would tell me to shut the fuck up since Lucas owns the rights and I have no say in it. Well I disagree. I am part of the cult following that MADE Star Wars what it is. There would be no Star Wars without US FANATICS. We supported Star Wars by buying books, toys, comics and other properties. There are countless web sites dedicated to Star Wars and its lore. George Lucas pretty much fucked us so he could make money with the new generation of kids. So they can buy the toys, books and other properties. He should have just made a new series instead of continuing one. He is very lucky that many fans still give him the benefit of the doubt, which he obviously takes advantage of. When Lucas decided to re-release a THX version of Star Wars on VHS it was good, since the videotapes haven't been available for a while. Then Lucas decided to remake the original three movies with new scenes. Again, that was okay and I bought the VHS releases. Then, Lucas released the original three movies again and has actually said that he would not put them out on DVD until after all three movies are done, hinting at adding more material being added. Is this how you treat your fans? By releasing THREE FUCKING VERSIONS OF THE SAME MOVIE? Also, in the beginning, Lucas had also decided not to release The Phantom Menace on DVD until all three new movies were done. It was the severe reaction of the fans that made Lucas change his mind. I'm pretty sure there will be a special edition of each of these new movies once all are available. Of course, Star Wars fans will buy them up. Does Lucas care what the fans think? No, he's too busy counting the millions we give him. He has made no effort to listen to fans, unless it's bad press (The whole Nsync debacle), always saying that it's for the new generation of Star Wars fans (small print: the stupid fucks who'll spend millions on a new shitty product).
Yeah, I definitely hate George Lucas. He created something really interesting and cool and now he has gone and destroyed it. Will I watch the new Star Wars? Yeah I'll watch Attack of the Clones (Fucking stupid title) and I'll probably buy the DVD. Though I have no expectations that this will be a good movie. I'm just going to see what else he fucks up.
I close with a big FUCK YOU GEORGE LUCAS.The Dream is Dead, Long Live The Dream!
