Trading & Gaming Cards

Hobbies >> Trading & Gaming Cards

This section is divided primarily into two sections. The first is non-sports trading cards. These cards comprise of any type of trading cards that are not sport-related. The second category is gaming cards. Magic: The Gathering pioneered gaming cards and now it is a booming industry with a large variety of offerings.

Non-sport Trading Cards

These are cards produced from movies, television shows, artists, events, etc. Anything that isn't sports goes into here. Card collecting was a derivative from comic books, and I've discovered I love completing a "master" set.

Gaming Cards

I never really liked Magic, but I jumped right into the Star Wars CCG, then the Wildstorm CCG and the list grew from there. Nowadays I don't play much and I concentrate on just collecting sets.

News & Rumors

This area is just for future product releases and possibly some rumors and such about possible future releases. I have no inside information but I just wanna pretend that I do.

Some great sets are now scheduled to come out in the new year.

Topps

Topps cancelled the Pirates of the Carribean Trilogy which sucks. However, they still have Heroes scheduled for release but it has now been pushed back to January 2007. That's not a problem as there are now 10 confirmed signers for the set and the rumours are that the boxes will be allocated. Grrrr. I hope the case I pre-ordered comes through. Also in January is the new Lord of the Rings Masterpieces II, another great set with two sketches per box. There will be new artists and old artists. In February, Topps has the Indiana Jones Heritage set coming out. I'm pretty sure that Lord of the Rings and the Indiana Jones sets will be delayed. Let's hope so...

Inkworks

Nothing at Inkworks has really interested me. The only worthwhile set would be the Aliens vs Predator Requiem that is scheduled to come out in December. There's a great box value of one autograph, sketch and pieceworks card in every box. Now that is a pretty good deal. The other sets that Inkworks has been producing have been great, but they're all properties that I'm not too interested in.

Rittenhouse Archives

The last big release by Rittenhouse was the Star Trek Movies set. There have been too many Star Trek sets for me to keep track of and the nature of Rittenhouse's retailer incentive cards and chase cards make it difficult for me to collect without buying a ton of boxes. Besides, after the Spider-man 3 fiasco, I'm wary of Rittenhouse products...until Battlestar Galactica comes out next year.

Upper Deck

Marvel Masterpieces is highly anticipated by all and looks to be a great set. The sketches look way better than the DC Legacy set released by Rittenhouse Archives. Let's see when I get the few boxes that I ordered.

Dynamic Forces

There's the Red Sonja Premiere Trading Cards with sketch cards from a variety of top-tier comic book artists including Adam Hughes! Woot Woot! Too bad Dynamic Forces has a reputation for being late on their trading card productions. This set may be a sleeper card set with some great artists on board. If the quality of the sketches are good, look for the boxes to be snapped up quickly.

That's the summary for now. There are a ton of other card sets coming out but I'm not interested in most of them so I've left them out. Stay tuned for more updates!

Star Wars 30th Anniversary Trading Cards

Here's the scoop so far on these cards:

  • Autographs (TBD) Hobby Only
  • Sketches (TDB) Hobby Only
  • Blue (1:12), Red (1:24), Gold (1:TBD) Parallel Foil cards
  • Triptych Puzzle Cards (1:3)
  • Vintage 1977 Foil Stamped Box Loaders (Hobby Only)
  • Animation Cel Cards (1:6) Retail Only
  • SW30 Magnets (1:8) Retail Only
Looks promising so far. Check out Star Wars Sketch Cards for some of the sketches. If the rumours are true and the autographs and sketches combine for either one per box, it's a good set. The parallels and foil stamped box loaders are nice but I'm definitely not gonna finish a "master" set of this series. I'll post more information here when I find it.

Saturday, April 21st 2007

There are some great sets coming up in the next few months. Stargate SG-1 Season Nine just came out and it's got an autograph by Lexa Doig that I'd like to get. Topps is doing a 30th Anniversary Star Wars Premium Card Set with sketches and autographs. Let's hope it's not like what happened with Heritage. There are a lot of good artists this time around too. I'm thinking of ordering two cases.

Rittenhouse Archives has Spider-Man 3 coming soon. Upper Deck has the Transformers Movie and Benchwarmer will be releasing another set soon. This year looks to be a great year for cards. Let's hope my pocket can take it.
