Review

The possibility of a Kevin Spacey autograph absolutely stoked me. I had sincerely hoped that Superman Returns was going to be a good movie similar to Batman Begins. The trading cards were released a month in advanced and the boxes had two, yes two memorabilia cards in each box! With the possibility of getting autographs, how wicked was that? Unfortunately that was the best that Topps had to offer as everything else was pretty pathetic.

The cards themselves were okay. It was the typical movie trading cards staple (thin cards) and the layouts and images weren't that stellar. Topps did try to add some fun onto the cards by adding Kryptonian on the back of each card. You had to get on of the 5 embossed foil cards to decipher the message. Fun for kids, not so fun for the collectors. So besides the autographs, meorabilia cards and embossed foil cards, what other chase cards were there? None. This is where the suck begins. Topps made the other chase sets exclusive to retail boxes only. Thus, you were only really guaranteed 4 chase card packs out of 24. That blows chunks. With autographs coming 1 in 3 boxes, the pickings were slim indeed. To make matters worse, the memorabilia cards did not guarantee that the material was from the costumes themselves. In fact, it states that it came from "materials used in the productin of". Ewww.

If Topps had given more thought into adding more chase cards, I would've really enjoyed this set. Instead, it seemed to be a waste of money to pick up, especially if you don't even get an autograph. I'd recommend you save yourself the money and buy a set from a dealer. The lack of chase packs really is a low point for the set.
