Review

There has been much dread and anticipation for this set. As more and more information came out, this set looked like a sure winner. Sketches along with autographs with a lot of other inserts. It appeared that this was the set to have for 2007. Then came news of the Harrison Ford autograph. Wow. Harrison Ford has been the most highly sought after Star Wars autograph. He did a signing last year and this is a result of it. However, there would only be 10 cards inserted. Wow again. Honestly though, the announcement of Harrison Ford drove the prices of boxes up. For 10 cards, it would have been better to not include him.

The base cards are amazing. Topps really put the effort behind them. The thick card stock is great, along with the foil on every card. These are truly 30th Anniversary Cards. There are pictures from edited scenes, the Ewok movies, even the infamous Holiday Special. This base set was truly a representation of 30 years of Star Wars.

Besides the Harrison Ford auto, there were several other high-end signers like Carrie Fisher and Anthony Daniels. Then there were the sketch cards. Topps got a lot of artists to do sketches and many of them put a lot of crazy effort into their cards. Adam Hughes did around 50 cards and he NEVER does sketch cards. The brand power of Star Wars really brought out the fanboy/fangirl in many of the artists.

The parallel foils were a great idea. I like the fact that I could get parallel foil sets. However, with poor collation at times, it was frustrating to be missing the expected foils in your box. I wonder if anyone will every own a parallel gold set. The puzzle cards were pretty good too. A total of 27 puzzle cards were created and they were printed on a high-gloss card stock. They're interesting cards to collect. Lastly, for hobby boxes, there were box toppers. These were the original Star Wars cards that were restamped with the 30th Anniversary logo. Pretty cool idea.

I broke two cases worth of the product and the collation was pretty good. However, I've heard some horror stories. In many boxes, there were no sketch or autos and the foils were missing in many of the packs. I actually had two packs of cards with four and five puzzle cards. That was interesting. I've heard some crazy things regarding cases, such as two Kayanan sketches in the same case, or a Prowse AND Fisher autograph in the same case (several times). Topps will need to work on their distribution if they want to stop losing collectors. I could imagine it's upsetting to those collectors who spent thousands to not even receive the expected amount of chase cards. I know I would have been upset if I didn't get my sketch/auto per box.

Overall, it's a great set worthy to collecting. You can probably get it cheap too with so many "sets" out there. The foils will always be pricey so it will be interesting to see who will have those parallel sets. I might work on a Blue Foil set...might.
