Daredevil Vol. 2 #87

The Devil In Cell Block D: Finale

Daredevil has been one of the most consistent monthly books out there for the past few years. Ed Brubaker has done in amazing job following up on the run by Brian Michael Bendis. In his first few issues Brubaker has entertained us with the death of Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock kicking ass in jail, the Punisher kicking as in jail and a second Daredevil running around the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen. Just who is this second Daredevil? The big reveal is made this issue and it's probably who you thought it was.

The reveal of the second Daredevil was a little anti-climatic as Internet boards were speculating like crazy. When I found out who it was, I didn't do a double-take and go "Holy Shit!". I did however, keep reading as the story was great. Matt Murdock is being manipulated and the big mystery is person responsible for it. It's not the Kingpin so who else can it be? The best part of this issue was the second reveal at the end. That was a "Holy Shit! Brubaker you bastard!" moment. Damn I love this book!

Michael Lark was a great choice to replace Alex Maleev. Their styles are different but still similar enough that it's gritty and "dirty", a perfect fit for Daredevil. I couldn't see Michael Turner, Ed McGuinness or Steve McNiven on this book. Maybe a Bryan Hitch or John Cassaday. Lark's work really adds a sense of realism to the book. Daredevil is one of those heroes that could happen in reality (OK, not the whole blind radar thing), but a vigilante fighting crime at night? Believable. Lark's work really captures that.

Overall another great read from the mind of Ed Brubaker and the pencils of Michael Lark. I hope both intend to stay for a while and quality issues keep coming.
