Reviews - Gen 13 Volume 4 #1
Best of a Bad Lot, Part One
This is the 4th volume of Gen13. Wildstorm has decided to bring back the original team. With Gail Simone at the helm a new origin has been created for these five youngsters. They're all still teenagers but instead of volunteering for the Gen-Active program, they have been 'grown' by Tabula Rasa, an organization within International Operations (IO).
In this issue, we see some very different origins for some of the team members. It looks like they've been genetically engineered since birth and place with agents that were meant to raise them in a certain way. Caitlin was meant to be raised as a nerd, Roxy a punk, etc.
The kids are all strangers that have only one thing in common, they're lab experiments that have come to fruition and their creators have come to collect them. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, but I'm sure Simone will fill in the blanks for us.
Talent Caldwell's art is pretty good here. He's not trying to imitate J. Scott Campbell or Michael Turner, or whoever is hot at the time. I'm glad that Caldwell is developing his own style and I think his artwork is a good fit for Gen 13.
A decent book that I'll keep on my pull list. I'd like to see where Simone takes Gen 13 and how this new Wildstorm universe plays out.
