Reviews - Invincible #35
Invincible is back from his ordeal with Angstrom Levy where a future version of Atom Eve professed her love for Mark. Mark's mother and half-brother are recovering from the battle. Mark's mother decides to give Mark's step-brother a new, Oliver. The real Robot is also introduced to the rest of the team and surprises everybody. Also covered in this issue is a nice one on one conversation between Mark and Arthur Rosenbaum, the super-hero tailor. It's in this conversation that we discover what Mark's dad meant when he said "read my books" from a few issues back.
Robert Kirkman's books have always had a lot of dialog. It's not like the recent trend where everything is described and the dialog is at times useless. Kirkman's dialog in Invincible #35 is as good as it gets. There's a lot of daily interaction here and it's just nice to read a comic where the dialog isn't always about some grand scheme or personal angst. It's just conversations that make sense to me.
I particularly enjoyed the conversation that Mark had with Art. The revelation at the end was an expected and not as big of a surprise as it was marketed. Still, I like that various sub-plots are happening throughout the book.
Ryan Ottley's art is still as good as ever. I've become accustomed to his style for Invincible and would hate to see him leave. Since there are a lot of conversations in this issue, Ottley has very little room to show his dynamic style. It's mostly headshots of the characters, but the flow is great. Invincible is a mature book, but I like the clean, non-gritty style Ottley brings to the book.
Another great issue of Invincible. Keep at it guys.
