Ion: Guardian of the Universe #6

Torch Bearer Part Six of Six

It was revealed last issue that Alex Nero was posing as Kyle Rayner and staging attacks throughout the galaxy. Kyle, with the help of Hal Jordan was able to apprehend Nero and in this issue he has returned to Oa to confront the Guardians.

The Guardians reveal that Kyle is the Torch Bearer. Should the Guardians and Green Lantern Corps fall, they can be reborn through Kyle. With this new power and status, th Guardians wish Kyle to be their agent. Kyle's newfound powers are showcased when Nero is set to blow himself up in front of the Guardians, a plot that was set up by some unknown force. Kyle easily contains the explosion with his Ion powers.

Kyle gets a great sendoff from the other Green Lanterns and heads home where is is confronted by a yet unknown character.

Halfway through the maxi-series we finally get clued into Kyle's Ion powers. I think Ron Marz has done a pretty good job so far. It's an interesting story and DC has given Kyle new responsibilities, especially with the return of Hal Jordan. By making Kyle Rayner more than a Green Lantern, you don't get a third Green Lantern book. I'm interested to see who the villain is that is working in the background trying to attack the Guardians.

Greg Tocchini's work has always been a little too rough for me. Even with Tom Grindberg providing some pages, I didn't really enjoy the artwork that much. It was very mundane and uninspiring. I did enjoy the different constructs that were created. The Dennis the Menace one was a nice touch.

I find myself still enjoying Ion and the story has been interesting for the last six issues. I'm hoping that the same can be said for the remainder of the series.
