Reviews - Manifest Eternity #6
In this issue of Manifest Eternity, Lobdell and Nguyen give a the story of Commander Rave and how she became the youngest commander in the fleet. Rave was the sole survivor of the medical ship Salk and was found by Admiral Ishmel and his crew. They unknowningly let aboard the same beings that killed the crew of the Salk. Rave has the ability to see these creatures and in the end, they manage to defeat them. Ishmel, realizing that the war with the Faerie Kingdom is nothing the Alliance has ever seen, decides to relinquish his command to the young Rave.
Lobdell and Nguyen do a superb job on this issue. Lobdell wrote the entire story through two points of view. The first through the eys of Rave, illustrated by Nguyen as child would illustrate, and the second through the eyes of the adults. Nguyen's artwork is great for this series, he has full control of all the art as he does the pencils, inks and colour. It really does show with his use of different styles. I loved how he coloured the crew in a bland grey tone while he showcased Rave in her bright red sweater.
I really enjoy these single issue stories about the war. Lobdell's idea of have an epic told through different points of view is a great idea and it's being executed well by himself and Nguyen. Let's hope that the book has attracted enough readers to stay for at least a year. I want to see where Lobdell takes the stories. The concept is refreshing and it was something I've wanted in comic books for a long time. Huge space epic without a main focus on a few characters.
Great artwork and story makes for a good issue.
