Lost In Translation - "Everyone wants to be found."

When I saw the trailers for this movie was I blown away. First it had to do with Japan and second it starred Bill Murray. What could go wrong? When the reviews came out, they convinced me enough to go to the theatres to see it instead of waiting for a divx release. I wasn't disappointed.

Lost in Translation is about two Americans who are in Japan on separate business. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is an actor who is shooting a commercial in Japan because they're paying him 2 million dollars. Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is the young wife of John (Giovanni Ribisi). Charlotte is accompanying John on a photo-shoot in Japan. The movie is about how Bob and Charlotte meet and find comfort in each other. There's an obvious age difference and there's a lot of unspoken romance between the two. The movie spans the time the two are in Japan till the time they depart and follows them through their adventures (solo and group) in Tokyo and around Japan.

This was an amazing movie. I loved Bill Murray in Rushmore and the Royal Tenenbaums and I loved his acting here as well. Scarlett Johansson was also amazing. The chemistry was absolutely fantastic between the two. From the time they first meet, to the last conversation they have. I could just feel the unspoken words between them. There were long periods of silence in the movie and it just added to the movie. I can't quite explain it but it just reminded me of times I had feelings for someone and I'm pretty sure they returned them but we both didn't act upon it. There were lots of humourous parts in the movie as well, such as the scene with Bob and the Japanese director, or the unusual meeting place of a strip-club. Watching the movie, you couldn't help getting the feeling that the movie was going to end tragically. After all, both Charlotte and Bob were married. What could they do? However, Coppola pulls something out that satisfies everyone, though I really wanted to hear what Bob said. Maybe it could work for me as well.

So do I recommend this movie to you? Yes I do. I saw this movie the same day I saw Underworld. They both contrast each other greatly and I enjoyed them both. This movie is about relationships and how people take comfort in each other. It's a real thought provoking movie and if you're really into that, then I suggest you go watch this movie. By the way, I really hope this does well at the Academy Awards; it's about time the underrated Bill Murray gets his just desserts.
