Underworld Evolution

I loved watching the first Underworld movie. Kate Beckinsale as a vampire , dressed in skin-tight clothing, fighting lycans (werewolves). Awesome. I didn't expect much but instead I got a movie with lots of action, a pretty cool plot and some nice character development. The ending of the first movie blatantly told the viewers that there would be sequel of Underworld did well at the box office.

I guess the original Underworld did well as Underworld Evolution has now been released to a fairly heavy advertising campaign.

The movie starts off with a recap of the last movie. I found this to be a great start to remind everyone of the events that happened in the last movie. This is key as Underworld Evolution is a direct sequel that takes place right after the events of the first movie. This works in remind fans and also bringing new viewers up to speed.

I won't give you a full synopsis of the movie as I want you to go watch it but I can give you a quick summary. Marcus, the last vampire elder has awakened after the events of the last movie and he has changed. Marcus is the main protaganist and Selene and Michael Corvinus try to stop him. That's the movie. Of course there are more intricate details I'm leaving out but I want you to discover them.

The movie is rated R because of the amount of blood there is. I loved every bit of gore that was in the movie. Vampires and lycans are brutal creatures and it's great to see the violence wasn't curtailed to get a milder rating.

Now many people will see this movie because Kate Beckinsale is pretty hot in it. There's even a sex scene (no nudity), but it's as close as you can get. For the gals, there's Scott Speedman (Fellow Earl Haig graduate!) all ripped and hunky. For the nudity crowd there are few token booby shots of some female vampires. Why do all female vampires have great bodies? Why are they not fat? There are fat and ugly guy vampires. Mind you, I'm not really complaining, just wondering...

So did I enjoy the movie? Yes, yes I did. It was a great sequel to the first movie. In fact, it was like one big movie split into two. I loved how Len Wiseman was able to get the same actors in both the movies. I loved the action scenes and the use of CG was not overabundant. Do I recommend this movie to everyone? Nope. If you don't like action flicks with lots of blood, don't watch it. If you liked the Blade Trilogy, then I definitely recommend watching this movie.

I heard somewhere that Len Wiseman wanted to do a trilogy. I'm certainly hoping that a third movie does come out. Len has shown that he can make a pretty good action flick with a limited budget and he's survived the "spend lots on sequel ala Matrix" bug that many successful directors have. Keep it up dude.
