Why I Watch It
Dennis Leary is the master of comedy. He had a great television show called The Job but because it was on prime-time, Leary's comical genius was limited by the censors. Several years later, enter Rescue Me.
Rescue Me is about a firefighter crew in New York after the 9/11 attacks. Leary plays an firefighter who has a lot of personal issues. In fact, all the characters in the series have personal issues. That's what a Dennis Leary series is all about.
An example is Dennis Leary's character, Tommy. He's a womanizer who cheats on his wife, is violent (cuz he's Irish), and is a total asshole. Yet he's a good father, great firefighter, and a decent man. You can't help but to love Tommy for his weaknesses as much as you love him for his strengths. At one point in the series, Tommy could see and talk to dead people. These interactions were done in such a way that they were serious and hiliarious at the same time.
To me, anyone could be Tommy, or any of the other characters in the series. Leary has a knack for creating characters that the audience can identify with. Not to mention the hiliarious comedic opportunities such characters can get themselves into.
To keep the audience on their toes, the writers of Rescue Me continue to throw cheap dirty shots at the audience. Some crazy events happen when you least expect them to and just when you think it couldn't get any worse, the writers kick you in the balls with another big revelation. I must love the pain because this series keeps me coming back for more.
The reason for such a successful Dennis Leary series is that there is no censorship this time around. Foregoing the primetime TV, Rescue Me is directed towards the HBO and Showcase crowds. With warnings of violence, nudity, sexuality, coarse language and mature subject matter, the censors are off and Dennis Leary can do almost anything. FUCKING AWESOME!
Only in it's fourth season, I hope that Rescue Me will continue for a few more years. It has the potential of being a classic series that always have a place in my DVD collection.
